Debbie Massey, LPGA Tour Player and Marketing and PR Consultant
After graduating from the University of Denver in 1972, Massey enjoyed an outstanding career as an amateur golfer. She was ranked the number one amateur in the world in 1974 and 1975 and represented the U.S. on both the Curtis Cup and World Teams in 1974 and 1976. U.S. Team Captain Marion Choate stated, "Debbie's golf was at its peak, but I was even more impressed with her personality and sportsmanship. All her competitors admired her, and despite language barriers, she became friends with everyone."
A Michigan native, Massey joined the LPGA Tour in 1977 and was named rookie of the year. Her 18 year professional career was highlighted by three official tour wins and two back-to-back Women's British Open Championships.
Massey's accomplishments extended beyond the golf course when she was elected Vice President of the LPGA in 1980 and 1981 and President of the Association in 1982. In 1990, Massey received the Golf Digest Founders Cup Award for humanitarian contributions off the course. The award highlighted her contributions to the American Heart Association, the Red Cross and the Burn Foundation. Famed golf architect Pete Dye said, "Debbie is an outstanding example of a person who has acheived top honors and yet has been so generous with her time to help others."
After retiring from LPGA competition in 1995, Massey started her own business, Opus 1, a sports marketing firm, representing LPGA players. She served on many committees and boards including the USGA Implements and Ball Committee, the National Advisory Board of the Women's Sports Foundation, the National Advisory Board of the Executive Women's Golf Association and the LPGA Hall of Fame Committee.
Most recently Debbie served as Vice Captain of the 2000 Solheim Cup Team where Captain Pat Bradley noted that "she brought class, humor and intergrity to the event, providing a role model for all."
Massey returned to her native Michigan in 2000. "I couldn't wait to get back Up North", she said. "When it came time to choose anywhere to live I thought, why not live where I always vacationed as a child!"
In 2002, Black lake Golf Club hired Massey to oversee their marketing and public relations efforts. "It is a pleasure to represent one of the finest golf facilities in the country. Whether it's on the course, in the pro shop, at the learning center or in the restaurant, we offer everyone who visits a quality experience."
Massey represents Black Lake Golf Club on the Legends Tour where she competes and also serves as a member of the board of directors.
